Synthetic oil: another possible reason to switch?

Just switched to Mobil synthetic oil this past oil change, and a thought just occured to me. Does anyone know if synthetic oil will help the timing belt wear longer? I know that the petrolium in regular oil degrades rubber over time, and I wonder if using synthetic will stop or slow this process down. I also wonder, if this were true, if it is too late since my engine started out with petrolium based oil and it has already permeated the internal parts. Any thoughts/opinions/facts?

Engine oil is inside the engine.... Timing belt is external, just like the other drive belts, just it is covered by that black plastic cover to help protect it
from the elements.

Oil leakage onto the timing belt can cause premature deterioration of the belt.

Can't say I know for sure if the synthetic increases the durability of your timing belt or not. I just had mine changed at about 96,000 km's which I believe is what is recommended and changed it regardless. Didn't even think about the synthetic oil and how it might help your timing belt.

Try asking some tech support hotline like Lube Tek from Chevron: 1 (800) LUBE TEK (582-3835).

I started using Texaco Havoline Synthetic 5W-30 at my first oil change and it's helped my engine greatly. Only go for service at 10 or 12,000 km's and it still purrs like a kitten four years later. Nothing needed except regular services although I stretch the interval.
