Johan, I had a great drive up to Falls Creek just after The Big Dump, weekend before last, but this last weekend I was driving up on bond dry road, or so I thought and encountered some Black Ice. I'd taken a turn nicely and straightened up, then started sliding forward in a straight line, no traction, no braking. I turned the car to the right and tried some light acceleration, nothing. I slammed into the snow built up against the guard rail on the next bend. Scared the **** out of me and I was a bit annoyed that the ABS didn't kick in this time. Can't get too complacent in a 4WD, especially when the temp is minus 6.5C.

G'day Geoff,
Re the Trailer Hitch Harness; ours came with this connector when we ordered the tow bar. The dealer didn't ask us if we wanted it wired-i just assumed it would be-and didn't charge us extra for it. As i said i've seen a few without this and just wondered if it was removable and i missed sumthin'. I don't want to remove it-just thought you could. Why have a towbar without a power connector? It would be illegal to tow anything without this wouldn't it?
Bad day with our Santa Fe today. Motorcyclist handle bar put 20cm scrape in paintwork just below fuel filler while trying to make his way to the front of the traffic at the lights. It wont polish out-bbb!! Also just missed out on getting involved in nasty accident 2K from home. I was turning left and car turning right out of same road hit another car coming the other way.... crunch!! not 10 feet away from the drivers window. I'm glad the SF has a good safety rating-just hope I don't need to try it out too...

Hi DownUnderSF,
Re your question on the Astrel towbar electrical connector.. Im not sure what you mean about removing it !
It is an extra Astrel part (AL600 M7053) and is called a TRAILER HITCH HARNESS...it may not have been fitted on the cars you have seen around your area. So all you may have seen was the bracket that the connector screws to?
I fitted mine and it would NOT be a quick job to remove as it is wired into both the rear lights wiring harness. Also what would be the point of doing so ?

Also my time in the snow was very short as I had to drop my wife to her work (she works at Mt Buffalo ~National Park one day a week and I had to get back down to run my business. So I didn't get to play much. It was interesting that the chains from my old Pajero fitted the SF. Not that I had to fit them that day.
I only ran it into the snow for the pictures.

Catchya Geoff

I had my Santa Fe in the Snowies this winter and it worked great. The permanent 4x4 made it feel like there almost wasnt snow, and the ABS worked well on icy patches. In the mountains I took it out of automatic, which gave great control over when and how power is needed. Great car

Johan

G'day Geoff,
Thanks for posting the pictures-not to mention for goin' to the trouble of taking them in the 1st place.
I printed them out for future reference. Given that our SF is used almost exclusively for city driving I dont think I'll need to check it for a while but nice to know that i now confidently can. I wonder what Hyundai would charge to check it at it's recommened 20K interval.?? .
On other Santa Fe related matters I too have the Astrel towbar, and on yours and one other I've seen a few times around town I noticed the trailer connector is removed (the electrical connector). Is this easy to do and re-attach when needed? I had a bit of a look at it but wasn't game to try to remove it.
By the way how does she handle the snow?

Cheers
DUSF - Terry (a bloke-not the Southern belle of Terri's Parlor fame)

Geoff,
You learn something new everyday. I thort the filter only filtered airconditioned air. I should read the manual instead of the brochures. i sit corrected.
