(Image of me scratching head) It seems I remember seeing an ad in a photo magazine a long time ago of a clockwork attachment for a tripod that would move the camera with the earth's rotation, similar to what is used for a telescope.

Forgot to add, I don't even begin to know how I want to approach a night shot of the moon with 24-80x........if I could pull that off, I'd be grinning from ear to ear!!!

You're absolutely correct! I bought a tripod a while back specifically for that reason and for some low light pictures as well. Also helps (along with the timer) with portrait shots. Tripods I have found, you get what you pay for like anything else. I picked up one that has multpile leg adjustments, and both vertical & horizontal bubble levels with a quick connect attached to the camera. Snaps in, an out instantly! Few other snazzy features too.

Ironicly, while I was trying to take some shots of the moon during the daytime, I had a heck of a problem with the tripod. Seems the moon moves too quickly to stay in focus while on the tripod, or I'm too slow tracking the moon using the tripod. So I had to go at it by hand, first using the 24x optical, then the full 80x digital......a project to say the least! Many shots to get one "ok" shot. For the 80x shot, I flipped over to sports mode and went crazy. Salvaged a couple digital-grainy shots as shown below:

A 24X zoom is great for getting difficult shots or catching a foreshortened view for the effect you want, but I found out years ago that I needed a steady tripod to avoid blur when going for that long shot. It's harder than most people think to hold a camera really steady.

I'm amused by the number of people who don't know how to hold a camera body steady by cradling on the palm of their left hand and operating the aperture and focus rings while holding the body with the right hand to operate the shutter button. I know I'm dating myself with the terminology, but there are still places where a film camera is preferred over a digital. I can do things with my old Minolta SRT-102 body and lenses that I just can't do with my digital. It's called control. You have to think about whats happening.
