Has anyone tried to replace non monsoon with monsoon headunit. I know both are barelly adequate but I have access to dirt cheap 6 cd in dash monsoon changer. I know my 2002 does not have separate amp ,only amp speakers. I also know factory pigtails are different but can be adapted. How bad would this setup sound (without adding amp) . This is my wife's truck and she doesn't need or want pounding bass or over the top performance, only the convience of the cd changer. Thanks in advance and we love the santy.

I don't think that anyone's ever done this, but if you can get them dirt cheap, it doesn't hurt to try it. If it doesn't work, you can always sell it on eBay.

The Monsson head unit should work; the issue is whether it puts out as many watts as the previous units.
If you have the door mounted amp/speakers I don't think you will have an issue. At best, it works fantastic; at worst you hit distortion earlier than you used to; most likely, it is a little different output-wise, but close to the same. |

Can I use the original non monsoon head unit in my 03 with after market speakers? Are the original ones amped? What problems could I run into?

You shouldn't have any problems with the non-Monsoon stereo, as that I know of, only the Monsoon has the built in crossovers.

Well I can recomend the Blaupunkt orlando cd 72, I have had that unit now for 5 years and transfered it through all my cars in that time, I have added a 10 disk changer kept under the passenger seat, the unit allows for the setting of eq, by preset or custom for each source, radio, cd, changer and two aux also, I have a blaupunkt 100 watt sub in also, with the proper wiring looms you can add a phone input, sat nav input for audio and also change the colour of the display from green to red. With the special mike you can by for it, you can set up the audio for your car, the unit generates a white noise that is listened to by the mike and sets up the eq for your car, the mike also makes it possible to have the volume increase or decrease according to road and external noise levels heard in the car! I cant fault it at all, but do add the remote control that fixes to the stearing wheel, its safer in use!
I paid at the time 380 for it and with the add ons, changer, remote, mike etc another 260 on top, but money for quality I dont mind spending. Trust me, its hard to beat! I think the specs are all still available in another model number now, you know haw these manufacturers like to change a button and the model number with alarming frequency! Good luck in the quest for audio perfection mate! I think I found mine |

Hey MetalMessiah,
I've got a 2003 Santa Fe and find the stereo really sucks. That, plus someone just decided my antenna was supposed to look like a pretzel, has made me decide to get a new head unit...and antenna. I was looking at the Kenwood DPX-701 recently and it's a double DIN. I was just wondering what tips you could give me about installing this. I'm very green and haven't made any mods or installs before. Any sites I've checked out all refer to professional installation. I'd like to avoid the cost if possible but would also like to avoid the headache if that's what it's gonna turn out to be. Any assistance or suggestions you could provide would be great. Cheers. |

Welcome to the forum TigerTheLion77.
Sorry to hear about your antenna. The system I have in mine is also a double din stereo. I'm sure it will be similar to mine to install. I wrote about some of the things that I encountered here: In Dash DVD, Navigation, Subs, Speakers, Headrest Monitors Take a look at that and let me know if you have any questions. |

TigerTheLion77,
You may want to go to Crutchfield.com and get some information about radio install. I purchased my JVC from them. They were not the best price but they provided very detailed install instructions as well as phone help that was actually helpful. My radio install was rather easy. Hopes this helps. Blusf02 |

If I swap out the Clarion head unit I have in my 2004 Santa Fe, am I going to lose any functionality? What I am talking about is there is some tie in (I'm assuming) with the security system because there is a blinking red light on the head unit. Plus I have read elsewhere that some cars have the door/key/headlight chimes tied in with the headunit.

Well if I lost anything, I don't notice it yet. I just finished swapping out the stock Clarion deck with my Sony Xplod. I did it in the dark, and it was pretty simple. Took me 10 minutes to work the heater console out. The right side just didn't want to let go, and I was really scared of breaking clips. But eventually the thing realized I wasn't going to give up, and it finally let go.
I think I am going to have to haul the deck back out and try putting the mounting brackets in a different hole. The deck is set too deep to put the molding around it, so I have a space around the deck and it looks like poo... I couldn't gauge how far it was sticking out without putting it 3/4 back together. I'll do it during the day next time. It'll be easier! LOL |

Do you have any pictures of your deck installed?
The Hyundai's don't have anything tied into the stereo. Usually the blinking lights are fake theft deterant devices that turn off once power has been taken away from the stereo. They aren't part of the alarm itself. |

Re: Head Units (Radios) and Head Unit Related Question.

LOL After I posted that, I went back out to the truck (cause it was annoying me) and hauled the deck out. Placed the bracket one hole further back, and it fits better, but the deck trim still will not go on. The trim is too thick to fit in the space between the deck and the console moulding. Not to worry though. It doesn't look nearly as bad as it did originally prior to moving the bracket back.
The only thing that is bothering me now is there are two nibs of metal on each side of the deck itself which is preventing the console cover from sitting 100% flush with the rest of the dash. I was able to screw the middle console back, but I had to put pressure on it so the holes would line up. Now it's doing a bit of squeaking when I hit bumps and so on. So now I am going to have to haul it apart again, file down those four nibs of metal (I tried to bend them, but they're so small that they're too strong to do so) and see if I can get it to fit better. The sound with the Sony deck is MUCH better than with the Clarion deck. Must be the EQ settings... I don't have any pics yet. I'll take some when I get home from work today. I've got a couple exterior ones that I am going to post up - just so I can be like the rest of you. |

So I finally got around to taking some pics. (Well that took me a while to figure out how to post a pic...)
![]() Anyways as you can see from the pic, there is a gap between the faceplate and the edge of the console. The trim that is supposed to go around the faceplate is thicker than the space between the faceplate and the console. All in all, I don't think it looks too bad. It definitely sounds better than the Clarion deck that was in there. Plus I really missed my MP3s... :) |

Not bad at all. Trim rings are a pain and almost never fit unless the head unit is sticking out of the dash like a sore thumb.

Re: Head Units (Radios) and Head Unit Related Question.

Yeah, I'm happy with it... Especially now that I took the deck out tonight (I've got a hokey bulb in the heater/fan area of the console so I was curious as to what kind of bulb is lighting that area - and of course it looks proprietary
I should have taken some pics of the two bulbs that are lighting the heating/fan area... I don't think I've seen pics of them on here, and some people might be interested. Maybe I will do that when I get a replacement bulb from the dealer (I can tap the area where the bulb is and it may light up - or it might not. It's a bit ornery!) and haul the lights out again. |
