Engine Cleaning???? |
Lead | |
|
My 05 Santa Fe's engine is sandy and dusty. I'd like to clean it. Can "Gunk" engine cleaner or engine degreaser at the self service car wash damage the electrical components? If so, how can I clean it safely?

Thank you for the complement T.S...
There's nothing it too it really, all I do is once a month open the bonnet/hood and use a power wash to get rid of the dust and grim before it has a chance to en-grain it's self... If you use a power wash on a Petrol/Gas engine then I would suggest you leave the engine running and try to stay away from thing's like Spark plug leads/Distributor cap and any other major electrical component, might also help if you carry some kitchen roll and some WD40 just in-case you need to dry off your electrics... If you do have engrained oil or dirt then Gunk has to be the dog's in removing it, or if you can't get hold of Gunk then Auto Glym engine cleaner or even their wheel cleaner will do, failing them any decent engine cleaning product (I always say each to their own as everyone has his or her own favourite cleaner) and follow the direction's supplied with the product... Other than that, say once a week just wipe around with a soft damp cloth and then dry cloth on the Santy's under bonnet/hood body and top of the engine and a spray of WD40 does help keep your rubber pipes supple and shiny... That's all there is too it really, nothing special I'm afraid, just try to keep on top of it... From this...: - ![]() To this...: - ![]() ![]() ![]() Hope that help's you, anymore questions please ask... Andy... ![]() CERISE SANTYS ARE KEPT FOR KINGS

I really want to use my power wash on my engine but am afraid to spray it. I'm not sure what to cover or what to avoid spraying. Knowing me, I'd probably kill the engine... >D

I also use a power washer every month or so. I don't hold it aimed at one spot, rather keep it moving rapidly to and fro just to blow the dust away. If you do this from day one there is no need for "Gunk".

Andy you're going to run out of hiding places one day. I took this photo one day when experimenting with the tranny reprogramming, hence the disconnected "earth" strap. I didn't notice any changes in the shift pattern afterwards anyway?
Is it just me or have we lost the spell checker feature since the hacking occured???? KC

I usually get the garage to clean the engine bay when I get my motors serviced, that way its their problem to get it going again if it stops running

Looking at one of the older posts on another forum, I noticed rich's (from the Elantra GT forum) post of his clean engine step by step.
Start with Cool Engine Cover vital electrics (I recommend this for newbies, but I admit I rarely do it..All these years and I've never fried a alternator or wrecked and engine) (just be very aware of where you are spraying water/degreaser) Spray a diluted 50/50 mix of Simple Green/Water Let soak for a few minutes Brush loose heavier debris and grease Start Engine Rinse Well Run engine for about 5 minutes to generate heat to aid drying Turn Off Engine Wipe up any excess and accessible water (Be sure not to burn yourself) Spray a light mist of Poorboy's Trim Restore or Meguiar's #40 Wipe off excess Run Engine for a few more minutes to help dry. Viola: ![]() ![]() This link also show you a How to for cleaning and detailing your engine. |

I must say that I might have to get Andy to come to Oregon to take care of my Santy's engine.

I think Andy could probably set up his own worldwide business by doing just that, going all over the place and cleaning everyones engine for a fee. Shoot I'll pay. Lord knows my engine bay needs cleaning. TS out (looking at this dirty engine bay) btw lovemysantafe You can only post pics if the image is located on a image hosting site or your own webpage. You cannot link to an image on your hard drive, cuase it will never show. |

Heck, if you all pay for my airfare (and Scruff's) then I'd be more than happy to travel the world cleaning your engine bay's...

This is all very very interesting. I'm still tempted to try this one day. I'm still a bit shaking in spraying down my engine with a power wash. TS, you said you've never covered anything but to be cautious when spraying... how can you when you're spraying the whole engine down? I only know where the alternator is and would probably cover that up... I don't know what else I would need to cover. I also don't know where the spark plugs are so i probably wouldn't cover those.

Hi Me,
If you are worried about it, another way is to take someone with you when you go to spray your engine and have them sit in the drivers seat and apply a small amout of throttle to save to engine from stalling... Also would be a good idea to take some kitchen roll/paper towel and a tin of WD40, once you have finished with the water give the engine and electrics a wipe and spray (TURN THE ENGINE OFF FIRST THOUGH)... Just take your time and you'll be fine, the last alternative is to get someone else to clean it for you... Give it a go, you'll do just fine... Andy... ![]() CERISE SANTYS ARE KEPT FOR KINGS |

Quote:Whoa, back up here a moment, let me state for the record, I have never washed my engine bay. That post I posted above was what Rich of the Elantra GT forum said. thats how he does it. I'm like you, I am tempted to do it one day, but 1- I haven't had the time and 2- I am a bit scared of spraying any liquid in my engine bay. One of these days I'll force myself to do it. TS out |

I'm also paranoid of doing it. I don't want to wet something that isn't supposed to get wet, and spend the afternoon at the Hyundai dealership, getting everything fixed.

Hey Metal, long time no read. People don't worry about washing your motor. I'm a truck washer, I use 3000psi, no problems ever(even on my old S-15) Home washers run from 1600-2600psi. Just don't get close to hoses or wires, you can cut them if you try. Don't even worry about a garden hose.
