Haze on headlight covers |
Lead | |
|
Hi again. I've noticed a white haze creeping over our 2001 Santa Fe's headlight covers.
Anyone else had this and do you think it's warranty coverable? CS |

It's a combination of 'sand blasting' from wear and UV deterioration of the plactic cover. I don't think it would be covered, but I seem to remember some lucky person getting their dealer to replace them. Best of luck!

csouther, Yes they replaced mine. My 02 lenses were starting to deteriorate at the tops of both lenses just as it meets the hood. If you looked close you could see it. I asked about this and the dealer replaced mine. I sure was glad. I would try as soon as possible because if they are looking bad now in another 2 years what will they look like. Blusf02 |

I put a plastic film on the headlights and fog lights, works great, no chips or fogging at all

This has happened on all three Hyundai's I own (1999, 2001, 2004). You would think they would get the idea and change materials. My dealer changes them out as well.

Dealer replaced both of my headlight modules at the 60k service; they were fogging and you could see a very slight peeling of the UV protector up at the top. Before you ask....my B2B warranty was extended to 72K due to the September 2002 horsepower issue. If I recall right the retail on the modules was around $500

I think that if you just put wax on them when you wax your car, you shouldn't have any problems. I've got 50,000 miles on my Santa Fe, and no problems.

mine appear to be hazed from the inside. not really noticable unless you are up close looking and the lights are on. How do you get the headlights off anyway? I couldnt even see the wiring back when i was hooking up front running lights, I ended up going straight off the battery instead.
Edit: Ok, I took a closer look, it was on the outside. I used a simple, inexpensive quick fix for this.... toothpaste! It makes a nice mild abrasive compound rub when used with a wet towel. It took 2 applications and a little elbow grease, but the lights look awesome afterwards. The coating is still there, just polished smooth and clear |

Also if the lense has yellowed you can use NON acetone nail polish remover will take the yellow off. Then polish with toothpaste. Be careful as useing to much can do more harm than good.

I have used Mother's Aluminum Polish with great sucess on headlight plastic. You can find it in the detail section of your local auto parts store and is pretty cheap. Just rub on the polish with a clean cloth in small circular motion. The more you rub, the clearer the lense will get.

Great tip miatawnt2b. At 65,000 miles I'm starting to get that haze as well. I tried using the applicator pads they sell at Wal-Mart that you attach to your drill, but they didn't work. The toothpaste didn't work for me either.

Jewelers/watchmakers used to use tooth paste all the time to take small scratches out of watch crystals (real crystals not the plastic kind) Seems toothpaste is much cheaper and works just as well as jeweler's rouge. My dad was a jeweler/watchmaker/camera repairman, watch him do it many times.

For those in the USA, look at the Permatex line, kit can usually be found at Advanced Auto or Autozone, might even check some of the others, refer to the
"where to find" link below. If not in stock, they should be able to order for you.

See thread (with pics) on Exterior and Detailing. I used a product from Walmart called Crystal View Headlight Restoration Kit= $ 20 /kit. 2 small 1000 grit and
2 small 2400 grit emery cloth, 2 tiny envelopes of fine polishing compound, 6 palm sized microfiber cloth rags, 4 tiny envelopes of lens coating and
DIRECTIONS. Worked well (so far). All except the coating can be bought cheaper at any parts store.
