Posts: 8 (02/07/04 18:13:03) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None When the mobile windshield replacement guy came by this afternoon, thanks to a rock kicked into my 2002 Santa Fe windshield from a passing Honda yesterday evening, I found out the source of the cabin wind noise that I have experienced since Day One -- noise that I always suspected was coming from the driver's side of the windshield. As the windshield guy was taking out my cracked windshield, I noticed how easily the gasket popped off on the driver's side. Sure enough, there was a sealant void of about 8" in length at the bottom corner and another 8" void just before the top corner! It appears that the factory robot laying the sealant burped a couple of times when my Santa Fe was coming down the line. In any event, if you have cabin wind noise, you might want to ask your dealer about the possibility of a robot-sealant "burp." Other than the wind noise, my Santa Fe has been an exceptionally fine vehicle -- 17,000 plus miles and zero complaints and zero problems!

There was actually a TSB that came out a couple of months ago. December of 2003 to be exact. Glad that they were able to fix the problem. The link below is the actual TSB released by Hyundai. Wind Noise from Windshield Molding Date: 12-2003 Model: Santa Fe 2001-2004 DESCRIPTION Some Santa Fe vehicles may develop wind noise from the windshield molding when driven at high speeds on hot days, which sounds like a loud "hum" originating from the windshield area (one or both sides). The noise is caused by pressurized air in a windshield molding channel. When the pressure is strong enough, the air leaks out, causing the molding to vibrate. This condition is more likely to occur when the molding is hot and pliable, typically when the air temperatures exceed 100 degrees F. This condition will typically occur on hot days, and almost never during driving in the morning. IMPORTANT Wind noise diagnosis is difficult without knowing the conditions, road speeds, cross wind presence and weather conditions that are present when the customer experiences the noise. Some customers may confuse road noise with wind noise. Asking the customer the right questions is an important part of diagnosing the condition. SERVICE PROCEDURE NOTE This repair involves the use of windshield adhesive. It is recommended that it be applied by a trained glass installer who is familiar with glass adhesives. 1. Verify the source of the wind noise under the same road and temperature conditions reported by the customer. 2. Fill the channel at the base of the "A" pillar with windshield adhesive. Be sure to fill under both sealing lips. 3. Fill the first 4" of the molding above the top of the fender. 4. Repeat for the other side. 5. Allow the adhesive to cure, then road test to verify the condition has been repaired. (Cure times vary depending on the brand of adhesive used, the air temperature and the humidity level). WARRANTY INFORMATION Normal warranty coverage applies.

Posts: 40 (03/21/04 18:52:06) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Mine is in the shop now for this same reason. I took it in last Monday and they still have it. I took it in about 4 weeks ago to have the wind noise fixed and after a week I needed my Santa Fe to bring home my new/used travel trailer. So I took it back last Monday and they still can't get rid of the noise. It starts after getting up to 45 mph. What ever they did the first time they had it only made the noise worse. It was only on the passenger side but when I picked it up, the noise was louder and there was wind noise on both sides. I will have to pick it up on Tuesday even if they don't have it fixed because we are going on our first camping trip with our trailer at the end of the week. Sure hope they fix it, the first week of April we head out on a 1000 mile trip to VA and back. That noise will drive me crazy for that long of a trip. It's funny, the loaner they gave me (a 2004 Sonata) has wind noise on the driver side. @#%$

But I needed it back so I could go pick up my travel trailer that I bought. I knew I would have to take it back in, I just didn't know it would take this long to fix it. It's still not fixed yet. I called today. I think they are scratching there heads on this one.

Posts: 40 (03/24/04 16:54:11) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Well I picked up my Santa Fe today to get ready for our camping trip starting Friday and they have not been able to get rid of the wind noise. If anything it is worse. They have replaced the windshield gasket; the door seals and a couple of other seals and still can not find where the air is coming from. The service manager said that the district rep is coming in this Friday and he is going to talk to him about what to do next. I told him a new 2004 with a 3.5L would get rid of the noise. He said ya, but I dont think he thought I was serious. I have been complaining about this noise since I got the Santa Fe back in Oct. 2002. I think the first time I told them about it was for my first check up on it, 1500 miles or somewhere around there. That time they said the just fixed a door seal and it was alright. It wasnt as bad but I could still here some noise. The next time the said it was the position of the cross rails on the top rack. Then the next time we had a talk with the general manager and he was no help, still the cross rails. I still only have 13,000 miles on it and its starting to get me p.o.ed. I havent had a chance to drive it much since I became disabled last February. When I took it in the time before last (3 weeks ago) I had removed the cross rails so the excuse was gone for them and they had to do something. The noise starts getting bad at about 40-45 mph. Thats when the service bulletin was mentioned about the windshield. We (wife and I) thought the noise was coming from the passengers window or door. So next Monday I take it back and we are going to have a long talk.

This time they replaced the front passenger door body seal and door seal and the rear cargo door seal and the noise is still there. I couldnt leave it with them any longer because I needed it back to go on a trip in the morning to DC. They have had it for a total of 17 days in the shop this month and I will be taking it back when I get home next week and they will try some more things on it. The service manager told me that they had tape on every crack and seam they could find and still couldnt eliminate the noise. They dont know where it is coming from. To still have to listen to it for this 1000 mile trip when I took it in a month ago to make sure they had it fixed before I went, is starting to tic me off. This is the only complaint I have had with this vehicle since I have had it. But the noise is worse now then when I first started complaining about it. They started to say the noise might be because of the visors I have on the windows. That is until I reminded them that I started complaining about the wind noise BEFORE I put them on. One of the mechanics said it can be caused by the luggage cross rails until I pointed to the top of the roof and said they are sitting in my garage. They have no more excuses and dont know what to say. Ill let ya know what happens after I take it back.

Posts: 7 (04/03/04 14:45:54) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I learned this trick years ago. All you need is a piece of rubber hose about three feet long, inside diameter about 3/8 of an inch. Shut all windows, turn on the blower full speed, close all doors. From the outside put one end of the hose in your good ear and move the other hose end around each an every window frame, door frame and anywhere else. If there is air leakage, you'll hear the blower loud and clear through the hose. Jimbo

I thought I was getting a resonant note from the engine intake, but now I'm wondering if I might have the same issue. Maybe it's the windshield molding rather than the engine. Does that fit the description of this problem?
