did anyone fix the clunk in the front end ?? |

many of us had that problem here , but I dont know if anyone had it fixed. those of you who live in areas with perfect roads may not even know you have it, but with the NYC roads , it bugs me every day . it happens more when the car is cold , and not only when going over a bump but also when you stir sahrply at low speeds (of course).

did anyone fix the clunk in the front end ??
|
I just checked the TSB list and found no mention of this problem - but my Santa Fe has had this problem since day one - as I'm sure all 2001's & 2002's probably do also.
Surely SOMEONE has had this checked out at a Hyundai service department by now and had it diagnosed and maybe even fixed? Tell us if you have! Everytime I go over a speed bump - it sounds like the engine is about to fall out when it bounces and clunks down. Maybe it's just a motor mount with too much play - letting the engine bounce too much? |

Our 2001 LX AWD never had this problem. But a long time ago there was a rumor that some Santa Fe's had front anti sway bar ushings from the Elantra installed by mistake and that the cure was to replace them with the Santa Fe part. Someone said they got this info from a service manager.

My 2001 GLS does the exact same thing. Especially now that its cold again.
I told them (dealer) about the sway bar bushing thing when I had my FE in for another problem and since they couldn't hear anything they didn't look for anything. Of course this was in the middle of summer. They said bring it back this winter. Sure, a 4 hour round trip once to prove it and then if I am lucky they will find a problem and then I would have to drive anothe 4 hours to get it fixed. Keep me informed if anyone gets it fixed in the near future. |

I have a 2001 GL and had the same clunking. Mostly noticable when going over bumps at low speed. The first time I brought it in they replaced the 2 stabilizer bars and bushings. That seem to fix the problem for a while but the problem slowly returned after about a month or so. I brought it in a second time and this time they replaced the right front stabilizer link assy. Once again the problem is gone and it has been about 1 month now. So far so good, the noise has not returned. I guess i'll keep my fingers crossed
Hope this helps Vinc |

Clunk ongoing...no clues from anyone
|
My 2001 has had front end noises since day one. There appear to be two issues. 1) A suspension (???) clunk over small bumps as reported by others. 2) A cold-weather sterring clunk (can feel it in the floor boards) when turing on smooth pavement. (Not been colde nough yet this fall to hear it.)
Repairs: Steerring clunk. They replaced the rack and pinion steering asembly one year ago. The noise-thump came and went all last winter with the temperatures. The "suspension" clunk and rattle drives me crazy. I drive ove a section of paved washboard about twice each week. Cllunk rattle. RR crossings. Same. Small, 2-inch curbs into parking lots. Clunk rattle. They have "tweaked" the CVs (??) and ball joints and i htink the torsion bars. Last week they replaced the left strut. Exactly as noisey as ever. The Western Canadian Service Manager and I took it out three weeks ago and he does agree that it makes an unusual noise. BUT THEY DAMN WELL CAN'T FIX IT!! Well the Hyundai Canada big wigs told me to report back after last week's fix. Thanks for the notes about some probable cause of the noise. I will pass along. Clive |

Ask them to look up this Technical Service Bulletin from Hyundai:
Service Bulletin Number: 0250010 8/2002 SUBJECT REGARDING FRONT STABILIZER BAR BUSHING AND BRACKET REPLACEMENT NOISE nomogm had posted this in another link. I remember that another user, dukes dad, had suggested something similar to the above. Let us know what they say about it. If they perform the changes or replacements suggested, let us know the results. Good luck. |

Hyundai must be very stupid. By the time this bulletin is available to the public Hyundai has had it for some time already. Some people were told of this problem, by their dealer, months ago.
You would think that the regional service people would be the ones to get the fix out to your dealer. If they don't take care of things like this I wonder what they do with their days. |

I think that Hyundai is still "getting wired". The information flow seems to be better amongst the forum members than it is to the Dealers.
I just brought mine in today for the "clunk" and my dealer was aware of the TSB. They will have the parts tomorrow & I should be fixed up tomorrow afternoon.. Lets see how this goes!! "Ford Outfitters.. No Survivors"

Well, the new stabilizer bushings & brackets were done today. I've driven over the same roads that made the noise and she is nice and quiet.
My service advisor told me that they sometimes need to re-torque the brackets after a few days. If I notice the noise again, simply bring it back to be tightened back up. They explained the design & re-design of the bracket & bushings. The old bushing was a split design and the bar can slip and the bushing can shift position. The new design prevents the bushing from shifting and is a one piece unit. It takes 2 hours to fix because the brackets are difficult to access. They need to drop the front end to gain access. I would think anyone with a 2001/2002 would have this problem. So far, I think this may be the cure!! "Ford Outfitters.. No Survivors"

jimsync2001,
Our 2001 built June of 2001 seems to be OK. Maybe they changed the bushing at some point, or maybe there is some other reason why only some cars are affected. Could be mine have not slipped yet, and they will in the future. www.hmaservice.com/webtec..._394877784 shows the bushing where the stabilizer mounts to the front sub frame. It looks like if it is split accroess the car then the bar can hit the bracket or the chassis. Next time I change the oil I'll see if I can see the bushings, with a mirror if necessary, or at least feel them. I have replaced stabilizer bushings and links in the past and have noticed that prior to replacement the most noticeable symptom was the car wandering in gusty winds. This was much more noticeable than any increased sway while turning. |

I just had my sway bar bushings and brackets replaced yesterday. The mechanic told me any Santa Fe built before April 12th, 2002 may come across this problem.

I just had items replaced on monday the 11th. Hyundai had my car for 4 days. Supposedly Hyundai is aware of the problem and has redesigned the bushings. The dealer was waiting for the new redesigned ones. the parts he replaced were:

I am a new first car owner and have, what is probably, a stupid question about the clunking in the front end of my car. I have had this problem, but it has progressively been getting worse. Do you think that this is something that needs to be fixed ASAP or can I let it go for a month or so until after my law school finals? Also, is this considered a recall under Hyundai's policy?
Thanks in advance for any advice. |

bnelson78,
If you are taking law school finals then you have no chance of having time to drive the car at all. Just get 2 hours sleep per night, have pizza and donuts delivered. While I have you counselor, if I hit my head against the wall until it bleeds can I then sue the wallboard manufacturer for failing to include a safety warning? About the stabilizer. You don't know for sure what the problem is in your Santa Fe. Maybe it's something serious. If it's the stabilizer bushings then the noise may be metal against metal. It can lead to damage which you can always blame on Hyundai I suppose. I would have to advise you to take it in now. Drop it off and get a ride to where you need to be rather than wait at the shop, or rent a cheap car for the day. One should always be concerned about any new noise a car makes. A couple of days ago our Caprice made a noise turning out of our driveway. I have heard that noise before. It's the power steering pump. But my wife usually drives it. She would not know that sound. One of the hoses has a leak and it was very low on fluid. If she drives it that way I have to assume the pump will fail, but the power in the power steering will certainly fail when the fluid gets low enough. Today we picked up a new hose and I'll see if I can install it or we';; get a mechnanic to do it if I can't reach the nuts. |

Thanks for the info ! This forum is great .
I've been having this problem for about 5 months now (2002 canadian GLS). Had my SF for one year now. Same clunk (or plunk) noise, when driving over normal bumps and when quickly shifting the streering wheel. Took it in for service and they can't find the problem. What makes it worse is that it's more obvious when engine is cold (go figure ?) and by the time I'm at the dealer, noise is gone. Also, another factor that seems to influence things is that when a passenger is in the car (a mechanic for example) the weight is somewhat balanced and the clunk is gone... Anyways, now I have some background info and a service buletin, I can go back to the dealer...Honestly, it's driving my crazy and I thought I was the only one since the dealer didn't find anything (I took it in twice !) ...I'll keep you posted. |

I had the same problem when I arrived at the dealer they were not able to hear the clunking noise because it was not cold enough. You can hear the noise though if you put your Santa Fe in park and turn the steering wheel all the way to the right or left. This is how I let the mechanic hear the noise. Within in one hour he had everything replaced for me.

Having this problem too. Turning wheel back and forth quickly at a very low forward speed and you can even feel the clunk as you turn back and forth. And every small bump and it clunks loudly too. Goes in Friday to have it checked. Also have a problem with the car idling in gear. Getting a loud moaning sound from either the exhaust or transmission. Had this checked before too and they said no problems. BS! Getting louder! My dealer has been exceptional on repairs so far. Hope he gets these right too.

Dealer acknowledged the clunk. Ordered new version of front Stabilizer Bar bushings and brackets. They still don't seem to hear the noise at idle in gear. Will have tech ride with me to show him when take Santa Fe back for the bushing replacement.
My question to you all are do you notice any significant difference in noice at idle between being in park and in gear? There is a loud differance to mine now, where there wasn't before. So loud you have to turn the radio up to drown it out. |
