Santy's Biggest Trip From Home Yet! |
Lead | |
|
Within a month or so, depending on how things with this job in the Bay Area go, I'll be packing up with the Santy and driving down to Sunnyvale, California
(665 miles one-way). Even with fuel approaching $4 per gallon in some places, I'm not deterred and I'm very excited about this trip. I'll keep
everyone updated on the progress and of course, pictures will be taken.

a person would. If it's worth anything, it gets more interesting the more you get to know it."

The internship failed to materialize due to the economy but I still made a trip; this one a different one than originally planned. I left Portland on Saturday
morning and made it 525 miles or so south to a small town called Winnemucca, Nevada. From there, I headed east on Interstate 80 to Salt Lake City. I did a bit
of sightseeing in SLC and headed north on I-15, then I-84 west. I am spending the night in Boise, Idaho and heading home tomorrow. I have taken many pictures
and they will be up as soon as I get home.

Was just wondering Andrew why in the he$$ did you go to those places????????
Why a young man of your age should be down in southern Ca. looking at the girls at the nude beaches down there. Or in Vegas looking, or, shup |

Andy...
Here they are: Heading south on Interstate 5...
Not sure what this is all about...
First exit...
Heading into the mountains
The summit...
Heading into the high desert
These mountains are called the Three Sisters
Some flat, wide open road
I had to stop and get a picture of this
The Santy got an average of 24.3 mpg for the trip with the best tank being 25.7 through Utah. More photos will come tomorrow. Promise!

You think it's hard getting me to post photos; just talk to my friends about getting me to remember to call them back. Trust me, you're not alone.
I'm sorry.
An overturned Lincoln Town Car; a little harrowing and a real wake-up call to drive safely out here.
I call this one, "HA! Fat chance!"
Oregon Thanks You; Come Back Soon...
Roads like this are everywhere in Southeastern Oregon and Northern Nevada (where this photo was taken; this is US-95 south of McDermitt)
Some of the scenery...
It started to get hazier around dusk.
The Santy through the peep hole of my motel room door in Winnemucca, Nevada.
DAY TWO Getting on Interstate 80 Eastbound the next morning.
The only tunnel on my trip...
More flat, boring desert...
If you glance at this sign, it appears to say 'Death Star Valley'. A little homage to the Star Wars community.
Somehow, I have trouble seeing the property value going up in this area.
Passing lane closed, 7% uphill grade, and a triple-trailer truck means 25 mph is the fastest we'll be going for a while.
If you want more, just ask. I can guarantee you they aren't too scenic.

Okay Andrew are we going to have to call your folks or worse your sister and have your car taken away until you give more pic's of your trip. Or worse are
we going to have to tell you folks that they need to send you to Andy for a couple of weeks to get you straight on your responsibility to the forum on your
promise for more pictures.
I for one take slight when someone makes a promise to put more pictures up then disappears for days doing g@d knows what and makes everyone start growling to get them. shup |

Here are some more...
Interstate 80 heading east; about 5 miles from the Nevada/Utah border
Cresting the rise seen in the distance of the past photo. This is the Utah Great Salt Desert
Heading across the Salt Desert
If you're looking for civilization east of this point, SLC is really your best bet. Neither of the other two towns even had basic services.
This freeway is flat and straight for a good 15 to 20 miles so highway hypnosis is a real problem, especially if you're tired
Off the salt flats, the road heads into the more rugged mountainous terrain...
A salt processing plant for the nearby Great Salt Lake
The Salt Lake City area is surrounded by mountains like these.
There was quite a bit of construction on I-15 through Salt Lake City
About 50 miles south of the Idaho border
Heading into the verdant hills of northern Utah..
I love this photo; the background and lighting is great.

Thank you young LMSF, I do love pictures, even if they appear to be of nothing I still love them, heck you should see some of mine...
A couple of questions for you though, first one, the pictures that advises tired drivers to pull over, do I take it you can just pull onto the hard shoulder (side of the Freeway) and rest or do they have proper rest stops...?? Secondly, not knowing the US a great deal, when you refer to Borders, are these just marked by a sign or is there an actual crossing, not like the main Borders, but more like control points etc...?? If you do have anymore pic,s it would be great to see them, I find it a good way to see the "real" world...
