And here are the full details: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Hyundai have initiated recalls on 963,305 vehicles as part of four separate campaigns. The first recall, blanketing over one half million late-model vehicles, is nationwide. The other three recalls, all corrosion-related on older vehicles, are limited to the regions of the country where salt is used to de-ice roads in the winters. The most widespread recall, affecting up to 531,894 2005-2008 Accent, Azera, Elantra, Entourage, Santa Fe, Sonata, Tucson, and Veracruz models, is NHTSA Campaign 09V122000. It is focused on a malfunctioning stop lamp switch that may prevent brake lights from illuminating when the pedal is depressed (the same switch may also cause them to stay lit after the brakes are released). The second recall, affecting up to 175,765 1999-2004 Sonata, XG300, and XG350 models, is NHTSA Campaign 09V124000. That recall, limited to America's so-called "Salt Belt" states, is centered around potentially excessive corrosion of the front sub-frame due to winter road salt applications. If unnoticed, the lower control arm may separate from its mount. The third recall, affecting up to 170,610 2001-2003 Elantra and Tiburon models, is NHTSA Campaign 09V125000. Also limited to the salt-belt states, the affected component is a failed lower control arm due to excessive corrosion. The fourth recall, affecting up to 85,036 2001-2003 Santa Fe models, is NHTSA Campaign 09V123000. Again limited to to the Salt Belt states, the recall is centered around the possible internal corrosion of the rear trailing arms in the vehicle's suspension. In all four recalls, Hyundai dealers will inspect, repair, and replace defective or damaged parts at no cost to the owner. I also went up front and looked at the service notes on Hyundaidealer.comat the advisors desk (they wont give me a login), there is nothing currently in the system as far as these NHTSA things go (Hyundai posted recalls), and nothing on "hmaservice".. it will show up on hyundaidealer first, and say info (campaign/TSB) can be found on hmaservice. I will take a minute (actually take me longer to type) to comment on what I know about each situation. The widespread brake light switch... practically all seen has been Sonata, a couple Tucson, a couple Azera, don't recall any Santa Fe (on my behalf)... Complaint is "ESC" light on, maybe the MIL, scan will bring up a C-1513 brake light circuit, I straight up replace the switch.. the mounting piece has different color, and I recenlty spied a mailing from a Field Service Engineer in regards to switches that might be on our shelf, looking for certain marking to removed from stock and returned. The second recall, been waiting for this one come on down the pike... we been "goodwilling" frames for past year.. Manager cringes everytime 1 comes in. Almost all we get is Sonata, quite a few been towed with a wheel sitting whopper jaw in the well... had one in last couple week where customer drove it till the steel cords hung out half way across tread face, both sides, then come in on hook with wheel sideways and axle torn apart. Had a couple XG (about same as Sonata), and have seen 1 or 2 Santa Fe. We had 1 yesterday, and other tech finished his today (did not have frame) on hand in house. Did oil change on Sonata today, his has a 2" long hole along a seam where the frame pieces mate and weld together. The third recall, Elantra and Tiburon arm at front.... seen a few of them already. I did 1 last month maybe that was at our shop a yr ago for arm on 1 side, then came back on hook with the other side broke in half.. did I say I do not like it when the tow fellas put them way out back ?? The fouth recall -- I have only done 2 vehicles, the first (most recent) got 2 arms, the left arm was rotted through, with wheel sitting crooked, and had a hole starting in the right side.. The other was for a groan noise I think it was, another tech ordered the part, I got the pleasure of putting it on. Posts: 256 (04/22/09 14:07:02) Moderator Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Ok, here we go !!!!!!!! Advisor walks out with ticket for a Santa Fe, proceeds to tell me it's the rear arms... tow-in... I ask if driveable, he not know, but I'll drive anything in if it will move. I get the vehicle in and on the rack, raise it, the left arm has a large hole in the back portion behind/inline withthe spring, so I take a 16oz ball peen to the right arm in same area, it just starts to tear from rot-thin material. Now I gots to go find manager, and get him to call DPSM, as the recall is not set in motion, and I got car with holes, tow bill, and operation guide lines and operation codes/labor time they going to pay me. I told my manager I'm going to do it same as I have in the past,,,,, arms and new hardware, parts ordered today, hopefully see them by Fri, and be done with it by Friday on my part. "Will try" to take a few pics and load them into my album here for all to see, so look later in the week end or early next week if I can get myself together long enough to load them. Posts: 13 (04/23/09 11:36:09) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	There is a "program" for reimbursement of repairs done out of warranty, but has to be since April, 2008. Hmmmm..... I am just a bit concerned that the dealer told me the noise was an "annoyance" and not a safety issue, so just keep driving until it bothered me too much. Well, I will have it inspected and work done as soon as I can. Waiting for the customer rep to call me back from H-America. SBR: are rear tailing arms the SAME as lower control arms?

Stay tuned, I got pics of the arms that came in on hook the other day, backed it on my rack before I left today, as arms and hardware should be here in the morning... warranty time is 0.9hr for 1 side, 1.5hr for both sides.... Then there is no distinction from 2wd and 4wd, with 4wd being more work and pain in backside.. Left trailing arm, see large hole - I'll see if I can get clearer pic and post better image... Right arm, I hit it with hammer, and material is so thin it is tearing - The last set I did, the fella' left arm was rotted through here on the side just to right of spring seen in the pic, and the arm buckled in half -- Last Edited By: sbr711 04/29/09 08:15:17. Posts: 14 (04/23/09 16:34:03) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Yikes! I am getting nervous about driving mine now. My independent said the right side was "bent" 3/4". I don't think there were any holes, but I wasn't looking for them when I was under the car with the Hyundai guys last week and they were showing me how moving the parts made them creak. Everything looked rusty on the outside though, like these parts (minus holes) and the coil springs were rusty and one was open more than the other so it hung down about 2" further (also on right side). I sure hope Hyundai fast-tracks my case. I want to get this done ASAP now.

I have an appt. on Sat. for my inspection under the recall - arranged by Hyundai America because I have issues and two places have said "rust" and trailing arms. I tried to photograph the trailing arms, by holding my digital camera under the car, but I can't really tell anything. They certainly aren't as bad as the ones above.

Posts: 2 (04/29/09 16:41:54) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The clincher for me is the left arm. The way the crease formed under the spring. The picture above looks identical. Glad you have the appt. Anyone that has a Santa Fe that qualifies for the recall must have it checked ASAP. In my case the issues with control increased over about 3 days. On Tuesday it was so bad that I truely felt that I had no control. As an example, a curve in the road that I normally take at 50+ mph caused the tires to squeal while taking the same curve at just 35 mph. This and the fact that any little variation in the road caused me to make corrections to stay straight. I had an alignment done a few days prior and thought that this was cause of my problems. I had no clue to the 'timebomb' that was under my vehicle. the local garage that did the alignment put it up on the rack and showed me the real problem. They gave me a price to fix it. As soon as I got home I did a quick search and BAM...there was the recall. I called and had them stop all work. Lucky for me, the parts had to be ordered so they had not done much. I got a case number from Hyundai and had the car towed the next day to the Dealership. If the pics are of my vehicle then you already know the rest of the story. My Santa Fe drives better now than anytime in recent memory!

Well, I took mine in for the inspection under the recall today and they will be replacing the rear trailing arms for me. They have to order parts. FYI, the regional service manager said that the letters to owners won't go out until June or July. They have to stock parts and rust proofing product. I'll have to bring the car back with my letter for the rust proofing spray and, I think, the front end inspection under the same recall. They will be rust proofing old parts that don't need replacing as well as the new parts. FYI-2, I noticed that the new Santa Fe has a 7 year "Perforation" warranty, which is exactly what it sounds like - a corrosion warranty. They also found out what was causing the brake issues, thanks to at least two people here that suggested it might be the tone rings. I asked the mechanic if he thought it could be that (same guy that did the used car inspection 2 weeks ago) and he said we should take it out for a drive so I could show him what I meant. I was thinking (it's not gonna do the funky brake thing while he's in the car), but it did! On the very first brake application after tuning onto the side street. He said, oh yeah that's the ABS kicking in at the wrong time. So, when the trailing arms and tone rings get in I will have it all done at once - some time next week. I will be so happy to get this all taken care of. Then maybe I will have the car "as good as new" and can spend my weekends NOT dealing with car issues. They are also ordering the shifter plate for me, but the mechanic thinks I can swap that out myself.

No creaking and groaning going over every little dip in the road or small pot hole (I try to miss the large pot holes!). Nice to brake and not feel it "thinking" about activating the ABS, and then actually doing it either. The brake pedal seems to creak a bit now. Maybe it did before. Can I WD40 it? The mechanic even swapped the shifter plate for me at no charge. I can't wait to drive it somewhere other than home via the grocery store to get a feel for it. I am so happy to have this done and have a solid car instead of a creaking, swaying car. Very happy with the Hyundai dealership service folks too. Yay!
