The Santy and I have yet to make tracks through seventeen new states over the course of three weeks. The states are: Missouri Illinois Indiana Ohio West Virginia (all 11 miles of it on Interstate 70) Pennsylvania Delaware Virginia North Carolina South Carolina Georgia Alabama Florida (side trip to see the beaches!) Mississippi Louisiana Texas New Mexico Arizona (can you say Grand Canyon) Nevada (she's been here before but not to Vegas!) California and finally...home to Oregon Pictures will, of course, be taken. Are we still on for the Hyundai plant tour a week from tomorrow? Day 2 will come tomorrow. Right now I'm dead tired. The Santy has been doing well and has so far averaged 23.6 mpg for the trip and the best tank was 26.8! Enjoy the photos. Waiting to leave campus. This is the traffic light leading off the campus and I just missed it. It took FOREVER to change again. Probably no longer than normal but it felt like forever. On Interstate 435 heading east out of Overland Park. I-435 east turns north and becomes I-435 North. I-70 is the highway I'll be taking all the way into Pennsylvania, some 1,100 miles east of here. From this point, it's 5 miles and 5 minutes ahead. I-70 East to St. Louis, Missouri is 1/2 mile out... I missed the 'Welcome to Missouri' sign so you'll have to forgive me. This is the best I can do: A Missouri Welcome Center sign. Getting off I-435 onto I-70 east. Interstate 70 through rural central Missouri. Knob Noster has to be the greatest funny town name EVER. I found this so weird, some of Missouri's highways are not numbered but 'lettered' so to speak. The traffic finally lightened up but this is considered by many to be the busiest rural interstate in the country, a reputation it certainly lived up to. Around central Missouri it began pour rain harder than I've ever had it rain on me before. In this photo, the wipers are on high speed and are on the up-sweep. I had to keep it below 60 mph in order for them to keep up. A video of driving in said rain: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6PQi1qFFsU Made it to Saint Louis just in time for rush hour....great. An obscured 'Mississippi River' sign. Crossing the Mighty River. This sign reads: Welcome to Illinois - The Land of Lincoln. From the people of Illinois. I didn't take I-70 through central St. Louis, mostly to avoid the traffic. So this shot was taken on I-270 which is a spur route running north of the city. Approaching the first major interchange outside St. Louis. Here, I-70 and I-57 meet and briefly share real estate. I'm staying on I-70. This took me by total surprise. Photos don't do this cross justice. The thing is HUGE. As much as I'd love to visit Chicago, we've got a schedule to keep. Staying on I-70 to Indianapolis. A stretch of mostly empty Interstate through eastern Illinois. And Welcome to Indiana. A quick shot of I-70 in Indiana. More photos will come tomorrow. What makes it so impressive is that it's on a hill and can be seen for something like fifteen miles, maybe more! The people who put it up aren't beating anybody over the head with their faith, just saying, "Here it is." This guy (the one in handcuffs surrounded by cops) was being arrested for what I'm guessing was drug possession, most likely with intent to sell. The drug dog being there and sniffing around the guy's van was my first hint that something might be amiss. Getting back onto I-70 towards Dayton, Ohio. Some rural Indiana interstate This is something you don't see everyday. There were two brand-new school buses traveling together. This first one was towing a white car behind it. Continuing on.... The Ohio/Indiana State Line marker. And the official 'Welcome to Ohio' sign. Below "Ohio" it says "So much to Discover!" A mileage marker... Anyone fancy a log cabin? More rural roadway This bimbo in the black SUV didn't get the hint that once you're done passing, you should move OUT of the left lane. Yes Andy...it was a woman. What is this sneaking up on me? Heck yeah...Genesis with the wing emblems, front and rear. Outside Columbus, Ohio, I-70 moves closer to West Virginia (Wheeling) and Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania). What the??? This weather was a very nice surprise, especially because they had been calling for steady rain for most of the day. I never saw a drop. Turning over 115,000!! I hope Andy likes these. The scenery improved as we got closer to West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Welcome to West Virginia - Wild and Wonderful. I will only be in WV for about 15 minutes as this portion of the state sticks up like a knife blade between Pennsylvania and Ohio. The I-70 bridge over the Ohio River. Entering the Wheeling Tunnel. Check out the bug in mid-flight at the top of the frame! Keeping to I-70 east, the speed limit is a pitifully slow 45 mph due to the old and narrow tunnel. It rose to 55 shortly thereafter. Pennsylvania Welcomes You - State of Independence Seriously? What is this, 1975? This torturous speed limit lasted an agonizing 60 miles. Not sure what bridge this is but it sure looks cool. And the railroad bridge next to it. Getting off I-70 and onto the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76). Got my toll ticket at New Stanton, Pennsylvania (top right). I'll be getting off at Carlisle, a total charge of $10.95! The PA Turnpike finally gave the Santy's toll ticket slot something to do. Here it holds the card and the $11 the toll taker in Carlisle will surely want. Free gas! You diesel folks will still need to pay $2.39 per gallon, though. Andy won't be happy about that. Approaching the Allegheny Mountain Tunnel. The PA Turnpike is packed with tunnels. Inside the tunnel...I like these two pics. Some of the western Pennsylvania scenery. Did you know that William Penn originally wanted to name his territory New Wales but King Charles would not allow it? Pennsylvania State Police hard at work, nailing speeders. The driver of this Scion looked none too happy. Another police car had an Audi A4 stopped about a half mile back from this car. Then another 1/2 mile after that was another cop, radar gun in hand, waiting for the next one. Yet another tunnel. This is the Tuscarora Mountain Tunnel. Bugs on the windshield and tunnel lights. A fairly lame self-portrait while driving. This is blurry, I apologize but it's a warning for yet another tunnel. The sign says 'REMOVE SUNGLASSES'. Approaching the Kittatinny Mountain Tunnel. This is a tunnel with a twist. Here's the twist...there is no light at the end of this tunnel. There is only another tunnel. Ha ha ha..... Out of the Kittatinny Tunnel and into the Blue Mountain Tunnel. Probably 500 feet separate the two. Inside the Blue Mountain Tunnel. Santa Fe -- It doesn't get any better than this! The four tunnels I went through are only four of the original seven. When the Pennsylvania Turnpike was built in the 1940s, it pre-dated any sort of Interstate Highway standardization but was built as a divided, four-lane highway. It's seven tunnels were only single-bore so when the Turnpike was brought into the Interstate Highway System in the 1960s, the tunnels were an object of close scrutiny. At each of the tunnels, the road went from a divided four-lane highway to an undivided two-lane road, causing major traffic headaches and reducing speed limits to only 45. Three tunnels were bypassed and abandoned when it was determined it would be cheaper to build around them than to drill a second bore. The three abandoned tunnels were Sideling Hill, Laurel Hill, and Rays Hill and along with them are abandoned portions of highway used by the turnpike commission for paint striping, rumble strip, and guard rail tests. Since their abandonment, the tunnels have not exactly been quiet and see frequent use from urban explorers to less conventional uses. A movie was recently filmed on the old highway, the US Military used the Sideling Hill Tunnel to train troops earlier in the decade and a church from Breezewood, Pennsylvania even used it for choir practice. Now, their future is even brighter than ever as an organization aims to turn the abandoned turnpike into a bike and walking path, complete with the old tunnels as part of the route. The hotel I stayed at last night was in Salisbury, North Carolina and was a small independent. Since I was just crashing there for the night, the fact there was no internet didn't really bother me. I just ate a burger, watched Discovery Channel and went to bed. The Santy seems to be stepping into a groove of her own and for the last three gas tanks has returned a rock steady 23.4 mpg, even running the A/C here in the humid South and with the nutty drivers in and around Atlanta. I need to recharge my camera and then new photos will be posted. Santa Fe -- It doesn't get any better than this!
