tcs grinding? |
Lead | |
|
hey all. so i had to slam on my brakes the other day on the highway to avoid an accident and noticed that when my tcs kicked in, there was this grinding noise.
almost like the teeth of 2 pieces of metal were grinding against each other. anybody have any thoughts? is this normal? i really dont want to take it to the
stealer due to past issues i have had with them. where is the tcs control located? maybe i can get in there and take a look if there is even a place to get
in. i noticed this problem when i was in the snow as well. i was playing around and hit the brakes in an empty parking lot and it did this grinding noise. its
obviously when the wheels just "lock up" and slide is when it kicks in.
thanks aaron |

Traction Control (TCS) is to prevent wheel-spin when taking off on a slick surface. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) is designed to prevent wheel lock-up and thereby
maintain steering control by rapidly pulsating the brakes repeatedly. My SF doesn't have ABS and I've never driven one with it in a situation that
would require its activation. All my friends and family members have ABS-equipped vehicles and I've experienced it several times. The grinding noise you
noticed is perfectly normal and is no cause to visit the dealer. I'm sure you noticed a pulsation in the brake pedal as well?
If it would make you feel better, I can go activate the ABS on my mom's Lexus and post the video for you to watch.
Santa Fe -- It doesn't get any better than this!
"Like people, every car possesses a unique character, with its own DNA, talents, and idiosyncrasies. Push it too hard and it'll turn on you, as
a person would. If it's worth anything, it gets more interesting the more you get to know it."

If I recall, yours is a 2.7l, it will only have ABS.. Go out in a gravel lot or side of road with a bunch of loose material and bury the brake pedal so as to
try to skid... as soon as HECU see wheel lock on the gravel (no traction-skidding)and wheel still turning on pavement (traction) the ABS pump will take off
running to generate hydraulic pressure to do its' thing.. you will hear a loud deep hum and brake pedal will do all sorts of things while you holding down
on the pedal.. it will quit when vehicle slows to 5 mph or when you release the pedal.
We used to test ABS out in the side yard at last dealer I worked for, wet lot will do if nobody around to be offended by your testing, just go find someplace to play and see what happens as the system operates. |

Mine does the same thing. I noticed it a couple months ago when taking off in the snow. Once the wheels slipped and the TCS light came on is when I heard the
grinding. It didn't sound normal to me since other cars I had which had traction control didn't sound like that when it kicked in. I actually did
take it to the dealer to have it looked at. They said everything was working fine and as long as the TCS light doesn't stay on, then there isn't
anything wrong (at least they didn't charge me anything). I've rarely had the ABS kick in (usually only in snow) and the brake was definately
pulsating, but didn't hear the grinding as loud and when the TCS came on. Anyway - I've since put on new tires and the TCS hasn't kicked in once.
So maybe if your tires are getting kind of bald, changing them out will help. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's normal. As long as you ABS
is working and the TCS light isn't on - don't worry about it.

The 2.4 and 2.7 models will have ABS, but the 3.5 will have TCS and ABS, because the TCS can close the throttle (electric motor operated) to reduce engine
power, cant do that with the cable operated of the 2.4 and 2.7L.

I've got a 2.7 and it has ABS w/traction control.

Well, I may stand corrected... pretty bad I see them all the time and not pay any attention to the gizmos on them.

My '02, 2.7 has ABS with traction control (GLS 2WD) - at least the TCS light comes on with the others momentarily when I start the engine.
Anyway - another thought, having just been through this, is that the tone rings need replacing due to rust? I was getting the grinding, pulsing noise - with brake pedal indications when braking on dry pavement. It actually happened more when I was easing into or out of a stop - like stopping in sequance at a stop sign. Eventually, it did it when I wasn't even braking. Always, I could stop it by tapping the brake pedal. The tone rings were replaced (at my expense - about $275, mostly labor) and the sensors on the rear suspension were replaced along with the trailing arms and some other stuff at Hyundai's expense (part of the upcoming recall) all due to corrosion. I have had no problems since. |

Yep, my '02 LX 4 WD 2.7 has both TCS and ABS....they've both been activated many times. The first was just to check them out and I used them hard in
snow. Got a stinking smell from the brakes that didn't go away for a couple of days. All is still well at 170K miles
but I probably need to have a second brake job (first was at the 60K
service and those are still with me)

sorry for not posting back. it sounds like this is normal.... guess i will just deal with it. I know my car has TCS and ABS cause when i turn the car on, the
TCS lights up and goes off. and in the snow it was going on and off when i was playing around.
thanks everyone. Aaron |
