The "stealership" wants to charge me $987.00 for TB replacement, $385.00 for Water Pump and $380.00 for Spark Plugs... Yeah right!!! So I decided to do this on my own but I am having a hard time finding where to get the parts for this job. My list of parts is: 1) TB Kit: It should include everything even the tensioners 2) Water pump 3) Spark Plugs I used to get all the parts in one place for my Miata when I did this job many times but for the Santy, I can't find a single place where to. Also, anybody suggests a good Manual to tackle this job? Chilton, Haynes, online? Thanks in advance, Carlos

So don't walk, RUN away from that dealer. I had my timing belt done back in March and it cost just about $400. You can find the Chilton manual here and while I haven't bought it yet, the price seems to be decent. I will warn you that working on the Santy's timing belt is much different than a Miata and the 3.5L timing belt is the hardest of the three Santy engines to perform a T-belt replacement. Good luck. I did my own plugs and timing belt around 150K miles and the Santy was down for two full days. A royal pain in the arse job if you ask me and that was a 2.7 Only replaced the belt, no tensioners and no water pump. It was still chugging along decently at 170K when we traded it as "cash for clunkers" a couple weeks ago. TG

Posts: 29 (08/22/09 10:07:22) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	NO WAY A DEALER IS GOING TO DO THE TIMING BELT ALONE FOR LESS THAN $900. I checked in 3 Hyundai dealers. At 63,000 miles I'm leaving it alone. Believe me, It will still be OK to change at 90,000 mile. Dealers just want to scare the crap out of customers. Those belt are made great.

Weird...I really don't think it would require another $500 of labor over my 2.7. Santa Fe -- It doesn't get any better than this! I know that you have to remove parts of the engine (I think maybe the intake manifold??) to get to the rear plugs on the 3.5L so there is some justification in the higher cost for plug replacement.

I know I could get the parts at the stealership but I don't want to. Online places are not only cheaper but I hate dealing with Hyundai dealerships... The car is good but the Customer Service and Dealership personnel need to learn a thing or two about Customer Satisfaction. The 3.5L is indeed the toughest out of all the engines ! However, I still don't think it's a big deal if you prepare this job well. The spark plugs job will cost > $300.00 since they need to take the intake plenum but since they already do that to change the TB, why am I being charged the full job (labor) again? When I asked that, I said... ok you need maybe 30 more minutes to remove the whole plenum, and spark plugs are maybe $10.00 each for platinum...so this doesn't add up to $380!! They just said... It's in our book!!...Yeah right!! BS!! With my other car, there are plenty of online distributors for parts... I can't believe I don't find ONE for Hyundai! :( Thanks Carlos

Posts: 311 (08/25/09 08:43:50) Moderator Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'm back, was out of town for the weekend. The intake plenum is not touched when doing timing belt on the 3.5L. The spark plug replace is a whole different job than the t-belt, no overlapping work. Our pricing shows 5hr = $430, add 86.xx for the t-belt.. add for the pair of drive belts, no labor cost when install with t-belt. I have not forgot you on the instructions, there is a few details that can be left off and worked aroud to save greif when doing the 3.5L belt.

The funny thing is that the actual service guy told me that you need to remove the cover and plenum to access the TB. Go figure. Now I understand a bit better...You can even leave the plenum alone while removing the TB. Damn who came up with this design? A simple Spark Plug job will take you 3+ hours on a 3.5L Anyways, my wife's Santy just passed 60K and I am planning on changing all the belts plus WP within the next 5K miles. I bought the car in CA so the TB should "last" 100K as per CA regulations. Of course I don't know whether the TB is different in CA cars than non-CA cars. Thanks for your advice... Still though, I am puzzled there are NO other places to buy the parts other than the stealership itself?? Carlos

Remove this ad Now that the santy has reached 72K miles, I am preparing for this TB replacement in t henext 3 months. Anybody has the manual/instructions on the 3.5L replacement? I got the Haynes manual but it's not that great. Any advice is great. Thanks Carlos
