My question is: was he telling me the truth or did I just pay for something I didn't really need?

I took my Santa Fe in to my Hyundai dealer for my annual Pennsylvania safety and emmisions check today. I have a 2006 GLS w/3.5L v6 and four wheel drive.
While there, the service rep told me that I need to have both the rear and front differentials drained and refilled along with my transmission. These were
needed to protect my warrenty and that they were Required. After I paid my bill, nearly $600.00, I noticed on the repair bill that these repairs were
Recommended not Required. When I got haome I looked at my warrenty book and the only time these repirs were required is if I towed a trailer, drove on dusty
roads or spent alot of time in stop and go traffic. I don't do any of these.
My question is: was he telling me the truth or did I just pay for something I didn't really need? |

Well, I can tell you from having to re-seal side covers on transfer units, old gear oil does get nasty, leaves filthy staining inside.. so I would advise
periodic change of the oil to be safe, as clean oil will not eat through the seals so fast.. You can get MOBIL-1 synthetic gear oil for maybe $10/qt.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but you got the wool pulled over your eyes. The dealership does NOT have the ability or the right to refuse warranty
coverage simply because you didn't perform a service they suggest. This is a money-making, fear mongering tactic that seems to work all too frequently,
I'm sorry to say. The final word on warranty coverage comes from Hyundai corporate. They look into how you have followed their service requirements (not
what the dealer says) in order to judge warranty parts and service. If you have followed their servicing guidelines, then they should have no qualms in
covering an issue that has clearly failed prematurely, despite maintenance. When in doubt, check YOUR book, not theirs.

Santa Fe -- It doesn't get any better than this!

FWIW, I was told this by the person it happened to: (Excuse me, my participle was dangling).
Guy had a Ford Windstar that got really noisy in the engine. He suspected valvetrain problems. The dealership said he hadn't changed the oil at their recommended interval but, of course, he did. He insisted they follow Ford's own policy and perform an oil analysis. They did, and it showed the oil was still fairly new but contained a lot of metal particles. Long story short, they replaced his engine and, when they tore it apart, the oil pump was faulty and didn't hold oil pressure high enough to lubricate the engine properly but high enough to keep the oil pressure warning light off. Moral of story: Don't let them tell you that you have done something wrong when you know you haven't. I will change my fluid about every 30K miles in the differential, transfer and transmission. Not worth the risk of uncovered failures when the fluid costs so
little. Of course $600 at the dealer is a bit rough to swallow.
